Shocking : Ryan Freel Commits Suicide

Ryan Freel

Former Major League player Ryan Freel has commited suicide, as first reported by First Coast News. Freel, a utility player who spent parts of eight seasons in the Majors, took his own life at the age of 36. Best known for his years with the Cincinnati Reds, he played 594 games with five teams from 2001 through 2009.

Citing confirmation from Sgt. Mike Paul of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, Jacksonville.com reported that Freel was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Cincinnati Enquirer received a note from Reds director of media relations Rob Butcher:

The Reds family is deeply saddened to hear of the death of Ryan Freel. His teammates and our fans loved him for how hard he played the game, and he loved giving back to the community. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

According to Reds.com, Freel was a "fan favorite for his gritty play and hustle" during his stint with the team. He participated in a Reds fantasy camp in 2011.(source)

Shocking : Reds draft pick Mason Felt in critical condition, father passes away after one-car accident

The Cincinnati Reds have confirmed a Jennifer Rios report in the San Angelo Standard-Times that their 2012 fifth-round draft pick, Mason Felt, 18, was critically injured in a one-car accident on Saturday morning just outside of Ozona, Texas.

The accident happened a little after 10 a.m. on Interstate 10, according to Rios' report. Felt, who was driving his 2004 Ford F-150 truck, began drifting into the shoulder and then over corrected, causing him to cross over both lanes of traffic and then flipped over.

He's now considered to be in critical, but stable condition. Unfortunately, his father, Roger Felt, 51, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.

As we noted, Mason Felt, a left-handed pitcher out of Hoschton, Ga., was the 172nd overall pick in this past June's amateur draft. He elected to sign with the Reds for $317,800, rather than attend Oregon State where he was headed on a baseball scholarship.

As many aspiring baseball players do, he was following in the footsteps of his father, who spent five seasons in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization during the early '80s.(source)

Breaking news : Mountain biker Iñaki Lejarreta was killed after being hit by a car while out training.

The 29-year-old was hit from behind by a car while riding on the N-634 road in Iurreta, Vizcaya, close to Durango. Efforts were made to revive the Orbea rider on the scene, but medics were not successful. A Renault Clio, with a 22-year-old resident of Iurreta at the wheel, is reported to have crashed into the rider at around 9:30 am, Lejarreta apparently riding westwards towards Bilbao. According to reports, the roads were virtually bereft of traffic (which is normal on a Sunday morning).

Iñaki Lejarreta Errasti, road legend Marino's nephew and former road pro Ismael's son, hailed from the area, and has been one of Spain's standout cross-country riders for the better part of a decade. He got his big break by winning the junior mountain bike world championships in Vail, Colorado, in 2001, and went on to represent his team at World Cups in the proceeding years and his country at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. He was also a double champion of the Copa de España, and has World Cup podiums to his name.

Only a month and a half ago, the likeable Lejarreta told this website that he was considering changing disciplines for the upcoming year, as the folding of Orbea's mountain bike team had left him scrambling for a job in 2013. As it turned out, he stayed in the blue of Orbea to the very end.

BiciCiclismo are honouring Iñaki by gathering all Tweets concerning his passing here, under the title "The cycling world mourns the death of Iñaki Lejarreta". Worth a read.

Lejarreta's passing naturally follows hot on the heels of Euskaltel rider Víctor Cabedo suffering a similar fate in mid-September. People are taking to Twitter in their masses to say farewell to Lejarreta, as well as condemning the safety of cyclists in Spain. Former Cervélo pro Óscar Pujol perhaps summed up everyone's feelings when he tweeted "I'm saddened at the news of Iñaki Lejarreta. Another car, another cyclist. I send my sincere condolences to his family".

Watch an interesting interview with Iñaki and Marino below:

The sad story of Paraguayan soccer player Diego Antonio Mendieta Romero

The former striker of Surakarta-based soccer club Persis Solo, the late Diego Antonio Mendieta Romero of Paraguay who died of a viral infection on Tuesday, was finally paid four months’ salary owed to him by the Persis Solo club from the 2012 Indonesian League competition.

Persis Solo manager Totok Supriyanto said on Wednesday that payment was made to facilitate sending Romero’s body back to his hometown in Paraguay. “We are giving Diego priority and making full payment. We are still working on it for the other players and will pay them according to the agreement,” he said.

Totok was referring to an agreement made between the management and the players of Persis Solo in October, in which the players would get 50 percent of the total payment mentioned in their respective contracts with the club.

The soccer club’s general affairs manager, Paulus Haryoto, said that Persis Solo had been experiencing financial difficulties that resulted in a postponement in payments to its players, including Romero. The agreement in October was part of finding a solution to paying the arrears.

Romero passed away on Tuesday morning at Dr. Moewardi Hospital in Surakarta. His body was riddled with cytomegalovirus, including his eyes and brain.

Although the soccer competition was over, Romero decided to stay in a rented room in Kota Barat, Surakarta, while waiting for his salary to be paid by the soccer club. During his time with the club, he played 26 games in which he scored eight goals.

Romero’s total payment amounted to Rp 131 million (US$13,645), comprising the remaining contract value of Rp 47 million and four months salary of Rp 84 million. The money was remitted to the bank account of Romero’s wife Valeria Ibanez in Paraguay.

Separately, worldwide soccer players’ representative organization FIFPro described the case as a
disgrace. “FIFPro demands that the Indonesian soccer association make an end to the structural mismanagement of countless soccer clubs,” it said in a statement as quoted by Reuters.

“It is a disgrace for the whole of professional football in Indonesia,” added Frederique Winia, secretary-general of FIFPro’s Asia division.

“I know countless stories of players who are intentionally not paid by their clubs and have to wait for months for their salary. But I have never before heard a story where a seriously ill player has been left completely to his fate by a club.”

Both the club and the Indonesian national soccer association, according to Winia, should realize that they had seriously failed and that they had much to explain, particularly to the family and relatives of Romero. “The least the club can do is to pay the arrears in salary to his family,” Winia said.

Romero’s wife said she had been promised that she would receive the outstanding wages.“He was practically abandoned, the only help he received was from three Paraguayan companions, nothing other than that,” she told Radio Cardinal in Asuncion.

Romero’s body was flown on Wednesday to Jakarta from Surakarta’s Adi Soemarmo Airport by his agent, Theodora Wulansari of PT Javindo. Theodora said the body would be put on a flight to Paraguay. “We’re trying for tonight,” she said. She said the body would be transported on a cargo plane and she could not predict when it would arrive in Paraguay.(source)

Flintoff ready for boxing debut

Former England cricket captain Andrew Flintoff says he is taking his new career as a professional boxer very seriously .After a 14-year career as a cricketer -- 11 of them with England -- Andrew "Freddie" Flintoff could be forgiven for putting his feet up in retirement.

Instead, at the age of 34, he is attempting to reinvent himself as a professional boxer, fighting unbeaten American Richard Dawson on November 30 at the Manchester Arena.

On Saturday night the venue -- which will be set up for 5,000 supporters -- witnessed the unsuccessful comeback of Ricky Hatton. The stoppage defeat of Flintoff's friend is a sobering reminder that while one may "play" cricket or football, boxing, with all its inherent dangers, is not a sport to be trifled with.

Some within the fight trade -- including former world champions Sugar Ray Leonard and Mike Tyson -- have been supportive of Flintoff, but others have questioned the wisdom of a man with no pugilistic experience stepping through the ropes of a professional ring.
