Andy Reid is Fired as Philadelphia Eagles Head Coach NFL

Andy Reid is out after 14 years coaching the Philadelphia Eagles, three people familiar with the decision told The Associated Press following Sunday's 42-7 season-ending loss to the New York Giants.

Reid is scheduled to meet with owner Jeffrey Lurie on Monday to discuss his future and an official announcement will come afterward, according to one person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because a final agreement hasn't been reached. That person says there's a chance Reid might remain with the team in some capacity.

Reid is due to make $6 million in 2013 in the final year of his contract. He said he wants to coach next year, but it's possible Lurie could persuade him to take a season off and perhaps help out in the front office in an "advisory" role.

Giants Eagles Welcome 400 From Newtown | Sandy Hook Elementary School New York vs Philadelphia

About 400 residents of Newtown, Conn., attended the New York Giants-Philadelphia Eagles game Sunday. Among them were a few families who lost children in the massacre this month, the Giants said. One was the family of Jack Pinto, the 6-year-old boy buried in a No. 80 jersey of Giants receiver Victor Cruz.

"We certainly wanted to honor and respect them," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said. "We wanted to try to do our part to help them in the healing process. I hope they left with some inspiration today."

The families arrived in nine chartered buses. There were some 200 students from the school system to which Sandy Hook Elementary School belongs. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell greeted the Newtown group in a stadium tunnel. The residents formed a gantlet to welcome players from both teams before the game. Then they held hands during the anthem.

"It was awesome," Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora said after the Giants' 42-7 victory. "Imagine what they went through on that horrific day. For them to come out here and support us as they did, it was an unbelievable feeling. We had a great effort out there for them."

Coughlin and Eagles coach Andy Reid slowly walked the gantlet and said hello to as many people as they could.

The game was played just more than two weeks after the attack that shattered Newtown and reverberated across the country — 20 children and six adults slain in one of the deadliest school shootings in U.S. history.

The team did not allow access to the guests, saying they just wanted to attend the game and enjoy themselves. The Newtown visitors held at least a dozen hand-made signs in the stadium. One green-and-white sign read, "Sandy Hook: We Choose Love."

Giants fullback Henry Hynoski said he could not have had a better 24th birthday than sharing it with the families from Newtown.

"It was emotional, running out and giving them high-fives and seeing the joy on their faces," Hynoski said. "We played for them. After all they've been through, they were out to see us. It gave us a lot of extra drive to get the win for them."

Did referees miss Kentucky pulling a switcheroo at the free throw line?

A Kentucky spokesman denied that the Wildcats intentionally tricked referees and offered the following explanation via Twitter on Sunday afternoon.

"Our bench argued that Poythress was the shooter & the official notified the official scorer that #22 was the shooter," Kentucky executive associate athletic director for external operations DeWayne Peevy tweeted. "After seeing the tape, it might have been the wrong call but it wasn't a switch-a-roo. It was confirmed to the official scorer."

Even though Kentucky lost by three points at rival Louisville on Saturday, nobody can say the Wildcats didn't do everything possible to pull off the upset. They even appear to have tried to reverse their poor free throw fortunes by switching foul shooters without referees noticing.

When referees whistled Louisville's Russ Smith for a foul with 1:05 to go before halftime for hooking the arm of Nerlens Noel on an attempted steal, the Kentucky center initially goes to the foul line as expected. Noel then wanders off the line to get instruction from the Kentucky bench, allowing wing Alex Poythress to slip in unnoticed and replace him.

Even though Poythress was only a mediocre 68.1 percent free throw shooter entering play on Saturday, that's still significantly better than Noel's 53.3 percent prior to the Louisville game. Poythress made the first and missed the second, a point that ultimately made no difference as the Cardinals held off a late Kentucky rally and won 80-77.

It's possible Poythress took the foul shots because he thought he drew a blocking foul on Montrezl Harrell as he drove baseline before dishing to Noel, but the majority of the evidence suggests that wasn't the call that was made. The referee who blew his whistle did so after Smith's foul and pointed directly at Smith. Plus, the play-by-play in the box score attributes the foul to Smith.

If the switcheroo was intentional, perhaps karma ended up biting Kentucky. Poor foul shooting was one of the main reasons the Wildcats lost as they made just 11 of 23 free throws Saturday, with Poythress uncharacteristically clanking four of his six.(source)

Israel league action: Wins for Bnei Yahuda & Maccabi Haifa

Hapoel Tel Aviv made the short trip to the Bloomfield Stadium to take on fellow Tel Aviv side Bnei Yahuda on Saturday. And it was the hosts who were the first to find the target - Hungarian striker Adam Hrepka breaking the deadlock on 13 minutes.

They then doubled their lead after the break through Sari Falach - the former Maccabi Haifa defender netting his second goal in three outings. Eden Shrem grabbed an 89th minute consolation for Hapoel, but it wasn't enough to prevent a 2-1 defeat.

Meanwhile, Maccabi Haifa extended their unbeaten run in the league to nine matches, with a 2-0 win at home to Hapoel Be'er Sheva. First Wiyam Amasha and then Shlomi Azulay hit the target - the two goals coming in the space of 60 seconds.

So, Bnei Yahuda's win denies Hapoel Tel Aviv the chance to regain top spot. Leaders Maccabi Tel Aviv are now guaranteed to end the year at the summit, and they can further extend their advantage when they take on Hapeol Haifa on Sunday.

Mancini criticises referee after narrow win at Norwich

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini criticised referee Michael Jones after his side's 4-3 win over Norwich in the Premier League.

"Samir Nasir did a mistake but after that it was not only Samir who did this but also the other player [Javier Garrido]. Why was only one sent off? I am for everyone having the same rules, not different rules for different teams. I hate this in football. I hate this because there seems to be two rules for different teams and different players. I can't accept this in football because to referee is the most easy thing to do."

"I don't want to talk about the referee because last time I said he might have had a big Christmas lunch and I don't know what. At Christmas parties, when you eat too much it's a big problem.

"I am delighted with the result and the performance but also when Samir Nasri was sent off we played well with the 10 players and scored two goals. In the first 25 minutes we played some fantastic football."

Case McCoy and Jordan Hicks Texas Football players suspended Alamo Bowl for Rape Sexual Assault

Quarterback Case McCoy and linebacker Jordan Hicks have reportedly been suspended by Texas ahead of its Alamo Bowl against Oregon State. This report comes after news broke Friday morning that two unnamed Texas players are being investigated due to a sexual assault claim and after Mack Brown announced two unnamed players had been sent home.

The description of those two players, via the police report: #1= black male age 20, 6'2" and 235 pounds. Bald. Medium build. #2= white male, age 21, 6'0" and 180 pounds. Brown collar length hair. Green eyes.

Those descriptions would come close to those listed for the players being reported by 247 Sports, though McCoy is listed by Texas as being 6'2 and 200 pounds. Neither player has been charged and arrested, if indeed these are the correct names. At this point, they've only been questioned.

McCoy is usually Texas' backup quarterback and is the brother of Longhorns great Colt McCoy. The junior has played in eight games this year. Hicks, also a junior, has played sporadically since recording tackles in Texas' first three games of the year.

Rafa Nadal will miss Australian Open as virus hits injury recovery

Rafael Nadal

Rafa Nadal has withdrawn from next month's Australian Open because his recovery from a persistent knee injury has been hampered by a stomach virus.Former world number one Nadal, 26, has suffered from tendonitis in his left knee since losing in the second round of Wimbledon in June.

The injury forced the Spaniard, who has won 11 Grand Slam events, to withdraw from both London 2012 and the US Open.He also pulled out of an exhibition tournament in Abu Dhabi on 27 December.

"My knee is much better and the rehabilitation process has gone well, as predicted by the doctors, but this virus didn't allow me to practise this past week," Nadal said in a statement."Therefore I am sorry to announce that I will not play in Doha and the Australian Open, as we had initially scheduled."

Nadal, who won the Australian Open in 2009, also withdrew from this year's ATP World Tour Finals in London. The world number four had announced on Tuesday on his Facebook page  that he had been advised to rest while he recovers from a fever caused by the stomach infection.

Nadal said it was a difficult decision to pull out of his third consecutive Grand Slam through injury."You need your body to be at its best for the Australian Open," he told the Australian Open website.  "It was a difficult decision and I am extremely disappointed to be missing such a great event."

The left-hander now hopes to return at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel event in Acapulco which starts on 25 February."It hurts to have to wait another 12 months before I get another chance [but] in the meantime, the focus is now on desperately trying to get back on the tour," he said.

Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley said: "It is completely understandable and we really feel disappointed for him."(source)

FC Barcelona player Lionel Messi during training at Moscow's Luzhniki stadium (RIA Novosti / Alexander Vilf)

The Spanish media have discovered the name of the Russian club, who offered Barcelona an unbelievable €250 million for the transfer of world’s top footballer, Lionel Messi. Of course, it was Anzhi Makhachkala.
On Thursday, El Mundo Deportivo reported that an unnamed Russian club tried to lure Messi away from Barcelona when he was negotiating a new deal with the Catalan side.

If the Argentine accepted the record salary €30 million per year, Barca would have to let him go due to the huge sum offered for the transfer.Messi prolonged his deal with the Catalans until 2018 in the end, but, according to the paper, Anzhi’s owner, Suleyman Kerimov, says the proposal is still in place.

The 25-year-old attacker gave up the idea of moving to Russia’s Republic of Dagestan because of the Makhachkala side’s vague prospects of participation in major international competitions as well as weather and the language barrier.(source)

Atlanta Braves new 2013 Caps leaked

The most newsworthy revelation in the whole crop, however, is that the Atlanta Braves' batting practice cap features the return of the "screaming savage" that served as part of the Atlanta's logo from 1967 to 1989 . The mohawked image first made an appearance in 1954 during the Braves' Milwaukee days.

The re-emergence of the questionable logo is surprising given that the Cleveland Indians have been distancing themselves from Chief Wahoo in recent years. (This year's Indians BP cap features the increasingly familiar block 'C'.) Even the Braves have landed on the right side of sensitivity, replacing an offensive savage patch on the throwback jerseys the team introduced in 2012.

Ajax to grow football talent for Russia

The Ajax youth academy will hold a training camp for Russian kids in the Moscow Region in the summer, with the prospect of making it a permanent fixture. Established a hundred years ago, Ajax are one of the world's most successful football teams and also one of the biggest brands in the game.

The Amsterdam side has won 31 domestic championships and the European Cup four times, including three consecutive years from 1971 and the now Champions League, in 1995.The club is renowned not only for this impressive record, but also the attack-minded philosophy they apply.

“Our fans like attractive football,” Henri van der Aat, Ajax commercial director, told RT. “And attractive football to us is playing in the opponents’ half, having a lot of the possession, being creative and doing a lot of attacking. That’s our philosophy because that’s what we think the kids like.”

“For Ajax, winning isn’t the most important, the style of football is most important – an attractive, beautiful game,” Derk Sauer, Ajax aide-de-camp in Russia and CIS, added.

One of the club's recipes for success has always been the Ajax youth academy. The breeding ground of Dutch football has unearthed numerous stellar talents such as the legendary Johan Cruyff, Marco van Basten and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Over the past decade it has become harder for Ajax to compete in the top European tournaments with home grown players being lured away by richer leagues. But the talent factory never stops producing excellent footballers.

“It they don’t leave when you’re 17 or 18, but leave at 25 then we can develop them really well – so it’s good for the player,” Alex Gernaert, Ajax youth coach, stressed. “We have to let them go and that’s no problem. But we want them to stick longer with the club. ”

The traditions at the famed academy remain the same as they've been since the late 1960s, when the Dutch created the concept of ‘Total Football’. Ajax strives to keep their way of playing football recognizable: attractive, offensive-minded, creative and fast, with always using three forwards, so the young players can get accustomed to the Ajax style.

After establishing a club in South Africa in 1999, the Amsterdam outfit have set their sights on Russia for a training camp. Using the best Dutch coaches the camp will be operating next summer forty kilometres west of Moscow, with the prospect of a permanent Ajax academy in Russia sometime in the future.(source)

Mike Vick Will Start for Philadelphia Eagles vs NY Giants Game This Sunday

Eagles rookie quarterback Nick Foles has a broken right hand, and coach Andy Reid said Michael Vick will likely start against the New York Giants in Sunday's season finale.Reid said Monday that Foles broke his throwing hand in the second quarter of a 27-20 loss to Washington, but returned to the game after X-rays at the stadium were negative.

Vick hasn't played since suffering a concussion during a loss to the Cowboys on Nov. 11. He was recently cleared to return.''There's a pretty good chance Michael will be the starter,'' Reid said. ''That's what we're looking at right now. That's the direction I'm going as we speak right now.''

The Eagles (4-11) went 1-5 with the 23-year-old Foles as the starter.''I banged it up a little in the first half,'' he said. ''It didn't affect my throwing at all.''An MRI taken on Monday revealed a hairline fracture, Reid said.

Reid added because it's a non-displaced fracture, Foles should be 100 percent in about three weeks.Foles, a third-round pick out of Arizona, completed 60.8 percent of his passes for an Eagles rookie record 1,699 yards, with six touchdowns and five interceptions in seven games following Vick's injury.

The Eagles were 3-6 in Vick's nine starts this year. Vick, in his fourth season with Philadelphia, completed 58.5 percent of his passes for 2,165 yards with 11 TDs and nine interceptions before his injury.

Vick was not in uniform Sunday. Veteran Trent Edwards served as Foles' backup, and he'll be Vick's backup against the Giants. Edwards has not thrown a pass this year. The Giants go into the game with faint playoff hopes. They need a win over the Eagles and losses by Minnesota, Chicago and Dallas to reach the postseason.

Serena Williams Impression: Athlete Responds To Caroline Wozniacki's Impersonation Of Her

Several weeks ago, Caroline Wozniacki's Serena Williams impersonation set off a firestorm of criticism. While some called the Danish athlete's imitation "hilarious", others didn't find the stunt so entertaining.

As the target of the prank, Serena Williams remained silent on the matter for quite some time. But the tennis player recently spoke out in response to the controversy. In an email to USA Today, she said she saw no ill-will in Wozniacki's impersonation.

"I know Caro and I would call her my friend," she wrote. "And I don't think she (meant) anything racist by it."Williams admitted that she hadn't seen the viral video of Wozniacki, but said she didn't understand why others felt that particular incident was racist as opposed to other impressions of her in the past.

However, she added that Wozniacki may want to reconsider repeating the stunt if others took offense. "I must add," she wrote. "If people feel this way, she should take reason and do something different next time," ending the sentence with a smiley face.

Black women's bodies, in the game of tennis, have been a topic of controversy and discussion before. Just this year, Taylor Townsend, the top-ranking junior tennis player in the world, was under the microscope for her shape and size, after the USTA tried to deny her access to a tournament because of her weight.

Williams has admittedly referred to herself as "bootylicious", a body classification that many women of color embrace. In the email, she said she doesn't pay much attention to negative commentary. At the end of the day, I spend my time focused on things to become better and not bring me down," she wrote.(source)

Shocking : Ryan Freel Commits Suicide

Ryan Freel

Amazing : Malkin's first KHL hat-trick

Star forward Evgeny Malkin stole the show this week in the KHL with his Metallurg Magnitogorsk side going top in the East.On Wednesday, the steelmakers beat Atlant 5-3 and Geno put his brilliance on show once again claiming four points and his first hat-trick in the league.

Struggling Atlant was edged out again on Friday by Traktor from Chelyabinsk with one of Russia's most gifted new generation players Evgeny Kuznetsov netting twice and adding one more goal to give his side a shoot-out win.

Meanwhile, the Gagarin Cup holders, Dynamo Moscow, are still top of the league, with Aleksandr Ovechkin having scored 16 goals. His latest against Metallurg Novokuznetsk was probably the most beautiful.

Dynamo’s cross-town rivals CSKA are still on the road to their full capacity performance. Pavel Datsyuk keeps giving us his magic on the ice assisting Patrick Davis, who opened for the Armymen against Ak Bars. But the visitors managed to come from behind through two from Kirill Petrov to win it 2-1

Sunday Times to Lance Armstrong: ‘Give our money back’

Banned US cyclist Lance Armstrong (AFP Photo / Frederic J. Brown)

The Sunday Times newspaper is suing Lance Armstrong for more than $1.6 million over the cyclist's successful libel action concerning doping allegations. In 2004 the British newspaper had to pay Armstrong £300,000 after the American won a suit against them over allegations he took performance enhancing drugs.

The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, USADA, proved earlier this year that Armstrong led a massive doping program during most of his career. The cyclist was stripped of his seven Tour de France titles and banned from cycling for life.

The Sunday Times announced this weekend that it had filed an action demanding Armstrong return “the settlement payment plus interest, as well as its costs in defending the case.” The claim is expected to exceed £1 million ($1.6mn).(source)

Football : Arshavin may join Pogrebnyak in Reading

Players Pavel Pogrebnyak and Andrei Arshavin (AFP Photo / Sysoev)

Former Russia captain Andrey Arshavin is close to leaving Arsenal this winter and moving westwards to Reading. Goal.com reports the Premier League’s underdogs, owned by the Russian businessman Anton Zingarevich, are ready to spend 4 million pounds for the 31-year-old forward. The deal is expected to be finalized early next month.

Arshavin’s first club Zenit St Petersburg and Premier League’s Fulham had previously approached Arsenal over a possible transfer, but the Royals appeared to be the most insistent. It is expected Arshavin will earn around 60,000 pounds a week, which will be the club’s new record, which is more than Arshavin’s former Zenit and Russia teammate Pavel Pogrebnyak gets at the club.

Arshavin joined the Gunners in 2009 and made 104 appearances scoring 23 goals. His recent doldrums has seen him settle deep into Arsenal’s bench, and made coach Arsene Wenger say the player has no future at the London club.(source)

Calvin Johnson breaks Jerry Rice's single-season receiving yardage record

The Detroit Lions fell to 4-11 in a lost and disappointing season, but there's one thing this franchise can be proud of in 2012, and that's the performance of receiver Calvin Johnson. Despite the fact that every defense he faces focuses on him almost exclusively, the absence of any consistent target to take the heat off of him, and a quarterback in Matthew Stafford whose productivity and mechanics have been inconsistent to say the least, "Megatron" has performed as few receivers ever have. And with 2:57 left in the Lions' Saturday night loss to the Atlanta Falcons, he broke Jerry Rice's single-season record for receiving yardage with a 26-yard catch from Stafford.

After the catch, Johnson handed the ball to his father, Calvin Sr., who was on the sideline.
"It's an accomplishment that took a lot of work," Johnson said after the game. "You're still in the moment -- in the play that just happened, so I was still focused. I don't think I even said anything when I gave my dad the ball. I just gave him a hug. But when I think back on it, it's a special moment.

"We had tried that route earlier, but it got walled off by the MIKE [linebacker, Will] Witherspoon," Johnson said of the record-breaking catch. "We called the route again, and I just bounced it around -- I was just like, 'See the ball, see the ball.' The guys were telling me that I was 4 or 5 yards away -- everybody was keeping the record up."

The old record was set by Rice in 1995 with 1,848, and Johnson, who ended the game with 11 receptions for 225 yards, now has 1,892 for the season. He has a very good opportunity to become the first receiver to break 2,000 yards for a single season, a goal once thought unobtainable -- even by the greatest receiver of all time.

"It's gonna go down," Rice told ESPN's Mike Tirico and Jon Gruden in the third quarter. "This guy is just really amazing. Watching him go out there and do his thing on the football field -- he's a true talent, and that's why they call him Megatron. You never want your records to be broken, but if anyone's gonna do it, I would prefer Megatron to do it. I think this guy is trying to not only break my record, but he's trying to get to 2,000 yards. I tried and was not successful, but I think he's gonna do it.

"He can run every route -- from the slant, to running by you with that 4.35 speed. He can out-jump out -- just get up in the air, levitate, and make those incredible catches. He has all the tools."
